Membership categories
As you progress through the stages of training, there is a path for you.
Professional (ages 18+)
Eligibility Requirements for Professional Membership:
Applicants must meet the criteria outlined in Options A, B, or C below, which include holding formal qualifications and/or demonstrating substantial teaching experience.
All applications for Prefessional Membership MUST include:
Evidence of formal qualifications (if applicable)
Academic transcripts (if available)
References (from employers, colleagues, students, or parents)
Proof of teaching experience (e.g., exam results, competition reports, employer reviews or student/parent feedback)
OPTION A: Formal Music Qualifications AND Teaching Experience
Hold a degree* or teaching diploma in music from a recognised tertiary institution; AND
Provide evidence of all teaching experience.
Include any evidence of pedagogical training, if applicable.
OPTION B: Recognition of Professional Experience (No Formal Qualifications)
Provide evidence* of at least five years of music teaching experience (with a minimum of 5 students each year).
Provide evidence of ongoing professional development.
Teaching experience evidence may include exam results, competition reports, employer reviews, and student/parent feedback.
OPTION C: Recognised Teaching Accreditation
Successful completion of a course recognised by QMTA as equivalent to formal music qualifications with a focus on pedagogy. Examples include teacher certificates or diplomas from established examination boards such as: AMEB (CTMusA); ANZCA (T.Cert.A.); AGMS (C.T.Mus.AGMS); St Cecilia (CMT); ABRSM (ARSM); Trinity College London (CME)
Applicants must:
Provide supporting documentation for all credentials; and
Submit evidence of teaching experience
ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP (Ages 18+)
Eligibility Requirements for ASSOCIATE Membership:
This category is intended for music teachers who are either in the process of developing their teaching practice or hold a music qualification without any teaching experience.
Applicants must meet the criteria outlined in Options A or B.
Associate Members are encouraged to work towards meeting the requirements for Professional Membership, and may apply for an upgrade once eligible.
All applications for Associate Membership must include
Evidence of formal qualifications and academic transcripts (if applicable)
References from current or former employers, professional colleagues, students, or parents of students
Proof of any teaching experience (eg. exam results, competition reports, employer reviews or student/parent feedback)
OPTION A: Music Qualifications (no teaching experience)
Hold a music degree or diploma from a recognised tertiary institution
OPTION B: Developing Teaching Practice
Evidence which shows actively teaching music
Student (Ages 16+)
Student Membership is available to individuals who are:
Currently undertaking formal music study or are in the early stages of developing their teaching skills, with the intention of progressing to Associate or Professional Membership in the future.
Applicants may qualify under one of the following pathways:
OPTION A: Current Student Pathway
Enrolled in a recognised tertiary music degree or diploma program
OPTION B: Supported by a Recognised Teacher
Submit a letter of support from a current or former music teacher
OPTION C: Demonstrated Musical Ability
Provide evidence of musical proficiency through:
Certified exam results, or
Performance video(s)
INDIVIDUAL/JOURNAL SUBSCRIBER
This category is for subscriptions to the QMTA Journal, Bravura. The journal contains association, branch and regional news, information about professional development, upcoming events, and recitals. If required, a printed copy is available.
GROUP SUBSCRIBER
For schools, businesses or any other organisation, if that organisation is interested in the objectives of the association. A Group Subscriber will receive a copy of the association journal, provide auditorium hire discounts and attendance at professional development events for nominated teachers at members prices.

Fees are due on the 1st of Jan each year.
Pro-rata fees apply when joining during the year.
The journal is in either digital or print format. For members, a small fee also applies for the print journal.
