MEMBERSHIP

The Cairns branch of QMTA draws its members from a culturally diverse region of Far North Qld, from the busy regional city of Cairns to Mossman in the north, the Atherton Tablelands to the west and Innisfail in the south.

We are an active group of music teachers compromising both private instrumental tutors and school music teachers. We enjoy many opportunities for networking, professional support and development. Many members are also actively involved in local music groups such as the Cairns Classical Music Group, the Cairns Choral Society, the Cairns Junior Eisteddfod Committee and the North Queensland Chamber Orchestra.

We meet several times a term. Newsletters are regularly sent to members giving details of QMTA’s and other musical activities.

Professional Development

As musicians in regional Queensland, we are committed to taking every opportunity for Professional Development. We frequently host workshops or assist other providers.

In 2025 one of the highlights of our Professional Development will be a second workshop with Barbara Powell after last year's very popular session on how to teach music to children with learning difficulties.

Student support

Junior and Senior Bursary.

Auditions are held annually for the Junior bursary (open to students in grade 7)  and the Senior bursary (open to grade 12 students). The aim of the bursaries is to provide financial assistance for students to be able to continue their musical studies. The Cairns Classical Music Group kindly contributes to the prize money and invites the winners to perform at one of their concerts.

Annual Student Concerts

We generally hold two student concerts a year. The first in May/June and the second in November. These provide an opportunity for students of QMTA members to perform in a friendly environment and are also a networking opportunity for teachers, parents and students.
